Salt, Sun, and a Little Pool Chemistry

There is something wonderfully simple about walking to one of the pools at Ecovilla San Mateo, slipping into the water, and enjoying the view. Behind that peaceful moment, though, the pool is quietly doing chemistry.
Don't worry, this is the friendly kind. No lab coat required.
A Small Saltwater Secret
A saltwater pool is not actually chlorine-free. It just makes its own.
A small amount of salt is dissolved in the pool water. The filtration system passes that water through a device called a salt cell, which uses electricity to turn some of the salt into chlorine. The chlorine kills bacteria, controls algae, and keeps the water safe. After doing its job, much of it eventually turns back into salt, and the process begins again.
These pools tend to be gentler on skin and eyes, carry less of the familiar chlorine smell, and cut down on storing and handling large quantities of chlorine. It's essentially a tiny chlorine factory, minus the delivery truck, the stacks of buckets, and the strong "public pool" smell. But it's not maintenance-free.
What Still Has to Be Done
Sadly, "saltwater" does not mean "self-cleaning." A saltwater pool still needs regular care:
Leaves, insects, and other uninvited swimmers removed
Baskets and filters cleaned
The pump kept running, so water circulates properly
Salt and chlorine levels checked
pH tested and adjusted
Walls and floors brushed or vacuumed
The salt cell inspected and cleaned occasionally
A quick shower before swimming
Our tropical surroundings make this especially important. Sunshine encourages algae. Heavy rain dilutes the water and changes its chemistry. Wind brings leaves, flowers, dust, and occasionally what looks like half the jungle.
A pool can look perfectly clear while its chemistry is quietly drifting out of balance. That's why maintenance depends on testing, not standing beside the pool and declaring, "looks blue to me."
The Great pH Balancing Act
One of the most important measurements is pH, which tells us whether the water is too acidic or too alkaline.
If pH runs too low, the water can turn corrosive and damage pool equipment. Too high, and chlorine becomes less effective, cloudy water or scale can develop, and the pool starts feeling more welcoming to algae than to residents.
Saltwater pools naturally push pH upward, so it has to be watched closely. The goal is water that's comfortable for swimmers while still protecting the pumps, surfaces, pipes, and salt system. Think of it as Goldilocks pool care: not too high, not too low, just right.
Why the Salt Cell Matters
The salt cell is the hardworking heart of the system. As water passes through it, the cell produces the chlorine that sanitizes the pool.
Over time, calcium and mineral deposits collect on its plates. Left alone, the cell may produce less chlorine or eventually stop working properly. Cleaning it too often can shorten its life, though, so the answer isn't endless scrubbing. It gets inspected and cleaned when buildup actually calls for it. The salt cell works hard. It doesn't need a spa day every week.
Rainy Season Changes Everything
Costa Rica's rainy season adds an extra layer of adventure to pool maintenance. A major downpour can lower salt and chlorine concentrations, shift the pH, carry debris into the water, and raise the pool level. Hot, sunny weather afterward can then raise chlorine demand and encourage algae growth.
That means the pools may need extra testing and attention after heavy rain, unusually hot weather, large gatherings, or stretches of heavy use. The water doesn't know it's supposed to follow a convenient maintenance calendar.
What Residents Can Do
Professional maintenance by Kevin keeps the pools at ESM running, but residents play a part too.
Showering before swimming cuts down on the sunscreen, lotion, sweat, and dirt entering the water. Removing toys and personal items helps keep drains and equipment clear. Reporting cloudy water, unusual colors, slippery surfaces, damaged tiles, or equipment problems lets small issues get fixed before they become expensive ones.

Keeping ESM's pools beautiful takes regular testing, cleaning, circulation, equipment checks, and a little cooperation from everyone who uses them. But pool chemistry isn't a group project. Leave that to Kevin.
