Homeopathy: A Small Remedy with a Place in My Family’s Story

By Staff Writer Claudia

My introduction to homeopathy happened unexpectedly while I was living in Germany. I was pregnant and suffering from a terrible cough. Accustomed to American drug stores, I expected to find the familiar shelves of over-the-counter cough syrups. Instead, when I walked into a local German pharmacy and explained my situation, I was immediately offered homeopathic remedies.

I was skeptical, but I tried them, and I was surprised by how much better I felt. That experience opened the door to something that would later become a regular part of our family’s home-care toolkit.

More recently, at one of our neighbors’ potlucks, I sat down on a stool in the Rancho without realizing that a platoon of ants had claimed the same territory. They attacked the xbback of my leg, leaving me with a collection of intensely itchy bites.

One neighbor offered me a homeopathic remedy. The itching continued. Then another neighbor gave me the remedy called Histaminum hydrochloricum, commonly shortened to Histaminum. Within about 30 seconds, I had forgotten how uncomfortable I had been.

The bites were still visible, of course. The remedy did not erase them. But the itching that had demanded all my attention disappear.

My longtime favorite homeopathic remedy is arnica. During my son’s toddler years, we reached for it frequently, from ordinary playground bumps and bruises to using it alongside medical care when he broke his arm. In my experience, it seemed to help with his discomfort and swelling. Arnica never replaced an examination, an X-ray or proper treatment, but it became a familiar tools we used for comfort and support.

What Is Homeopathy?

Homeopathy is a system of complementary medicine developed in Germany more than 200 years ago. It is based on two main ideas. The first is often described as “like cures like.” In simple terms, homeopathy proposes that a substance capable of producing certain symptoms in a healthy person may, in a specially prepared form, help a person experiencing similar symptoms.

The second idea involves repeated dilution and shaking, a preparation process called potentization. Many homeopathic remedies are diluted so extensively that little or none of the original substance may remain.

Homeopathy is not the same thing as herbal medicine. An herbal remedy generally contains a measurable amount of a plant’s active compounds. A homeopathic remedy may begin with a plant, mineral or animal substance, but it is prepared through a particular series of dilutions.

Why People Include It in a Travel Kit

Homeopathic pellets and tablets are small, light and easy to carry. For someone traveling or living far from a familiar pharmacy, a carefully organized kit can offer a comforting option for addressing minor, familiar symptoms while deciding whether professional care is needed.

This can feel especially useful when language barriers, unfamiliar medications or distance from one’s regular doctor make everyday healthcare more complicated.

Homeopathy should never delay emergency treatments or medical care, especially for breathing difficulty, a severe allergic reaction, dehydration, a high or persistent fever, a serious injury, infection, or rapidly worsening symptoms.

What About Medication Interactions?

Because many homeopathic remedies are extremely diluted, direct drug interactions may be less likely than with conventional medicines or concentrated herbal supplements.

Some products labeled homeopathic may contain measurable amounts of active ingredients. Liquid preparations can contain alcohol, and tablets or pellets may contain sugar or lactose. Product quality and dilution can also vary. The safest practice is to show the actual label to a pharmacist or healthcare professional, particularly when taking prescription medications, during pregnancy or when treating a child.

Learning to Use Homeopathy Thoughtfully

For those interested in learning more, one of my favorite approachable resources is Sue Meyer’s Homeopathy for Mommies podcast. It offers practical discussions about incorporating homeopathy into everyday family life.

I also frequently consult Joette Calabrese’s website, which contains articles, podcasts and educational resources focused on what she calls Practical Homeopathy.

Homeopathy occupies an interesting space between tradition, personal experience and scientific debate. I cannot prove that a remedy caused the relief I experienced in Germany or at the Rancho. I can only say that those moments caught my attention, and that homeopathy has remained a small but valued part of my family’s story.
